Affirming Spaces

This interactive workshop is led by Ilya Parker of Decolonizing Fitness. It is taught directly from the book: “LGBTQIA Affirming Spaces: Fitness Edition” and was created for fitness and movement professionals. Affirming Spaces was designed to help each participant learn the ways they can provide a supportive environment to individuals who have historically not felt welcomed in fitness spaces i.e. queer, transgender & gender non conforming people especially those who exist at the intersections of race, fatness, disability, age, class & health status.

Ilya is a black non binary trans masculine person (he/they), Physical Therapist Assistant and ACE Certified Medical Exercise Specialist with over 13 years of rehabilitative and functional training experience. Ilya is a social justice advocate, and educator whose work centers racial, gender and healing justice.

In addition to providing a chance for us to learn and grow together in community, this workshop also provides us with an opportunity to support a new community-based project. Binding Health and Top Surgery Recovery

This is a hybrid version of our Binding Health and Top Surgery Prep and Recovery workshops created specifically for the Philadelphia Trans Wellness Conference.

This workshop will explore the ways in which binding and top surgery recovery can impact soft tissue and offer strategies for healing. There will be short demonstrations of exercises to decrease pain and increase range of motion and strength as well as opportunities for participants to practice these exercises. Participants will leave with an at-home program for addressing common issues caused by binding and top surgery recovery.

Binding Health

This interactive workshop will bring together information from the fields of personal training and massage to address ways we can care for the body while binding. We will talk about how binding impacts the musculoskeletal system and review exercises that can be done almost anywhere to address the pain and discomfort that can come from binding. This workshop is sliding scale $25-50 with full scholarships available.
