This interactive workshop is led by Ilya Parker of Decolonizing Fitness. It is taught directly from the book: “LGBTQIA Affirming Spaces: Fitness Edition” and was created for fitness and movement professionals. Affirming Spaces was designed to help each participant learn the ways they can provide a supportive environment to individuals who have historically not felt welcomed in fitness spaces i.e. queer, transgender & gender non conforming people especially those who exist at the intersections of race, fatness, disability, age, class & health status.
Ilya is a black non binary trans masculine person (he/they), Physical Therapist Assistant and ACE Certified Medical Exercise Specialist with over 13 years of rehabilitative and functional training experience. Ilya is a social justice advocate, and educator whose work centers racial, gender and healing justice.
In addition to providing a chance for us to learn and grow together in community, this workshop also provides us with an opportunity to support a new community-based project. Thanks to the generous support of our sponsors (Three Queens Yoga, Power Plant Gym, Superfit Hero, KG Strong, and Studio 34), all ticket sales will go directly to the Freedom Barbell Club. Below is a description of the Freedom Barbell Club from Jibri Douglas, the head coach and founder.
The Freedom Barbell Club is West Philadelphia’s first and only Olympic weightlifting gym. Through the gym we have a non-profit called Freedom Lifters Weightlifting. Freedom Lifters is a program in partnership with the James L. Wright Recreation Center in the Mantua neighborhood of West Philadelphia. It is a program for youth, ages 13+, and we teach youth the sport of Olympic Weightlifting. Weightlifting is then used as a platform to teach STEM education, leadership skills, yoga and meditation, and we provide youth with small shares of fresh produce. Additionally, we employ youth for the summer through the Philadelphia Youth Network WorkReady program.
This workshop will be held on Sunday, July 28th, from 12-4 PM at KG Strong (1901 S 9th St Room 206B, inside the Bok Building). Tickets are sliding scale $25-75, and a limited of no cost tickets will be available for those who need them. Snacks will be provided. Please contact AsherFreemanCPT@Gmail.com with any questions or concerns, including requests for interpretation as well as need for no-cost tickets.
